WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2025: UNMASKING THE APPEAL

Share

The Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) joins the World Health Organisation (WHO), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Global Community in celebrating this year’s World No Tobacco Day on this 31st day of May, 2025. The theme of this year’s celebration is, ‘*Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products’.

The aim of this year’s campaign includes: Raising awareness (Inform the public on how industry tactics manipulate the appearance and appeal of tobacco and nicotine products), Advocating for policy change (Measures to ban flavours and additives that make these products more appealing; Complete bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, including on digital platforms; Regulation of the design of the products and their packages to make them less appealing), and Reducing demand (Exposing these tactics aims to reduce demand, particularly among youth, ultimately lowering their exposure to nicotine and tobacco products). PAN, in collaboration with the WHO and AAP, is championing these aims through the activities of Nigeria Tobacco-Free School Initiative. These activities include:

  1. Propagating the elimination of tobacco and tobacco products in Nigerian schools and school population
  2. Developing the capacity of the Nigerian child to be able to make healthy, informed lifestyle choices
  3. Providing access to tobacco cessation services in Nigerian schools
  4. Advocating a tobacco-free childhood for the Nigerian child.

Let us all join hands in promoting a tobacco-free, healthier childhood and environment for our children and future generation.
