Theme: “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”

The Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) joins the Nigerian Society for Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) and its global partners to celebrate this year’s World Breastfeeding Week from the 1st to the 7th of August 2025.

This year’s theme emphasizes the role of various actors in providing breastfeeding support for mothers. A sustainable breastfeeding support system is a societal approach that ensures that every mother has the necessary support, the right environment, and resources to breastfeed successfully, from conception through the child’s first two years of life and beyond.

Breastfeeding support must begin in the antenatal period, with trained health workers providing clear, reassuring, and skilled guidance. It should continue at the level of the family and up to the workplace. Promoting social norms across society and generations and ensuring environmental and climate sustainability through linking breastfeeding and planetary health are also ways to ensure support and sustainability of breastfeeding.

As child advocates, let us maintain the warm chain of breastfeeding support across health, community and workplace sectors as we ensure that babies everywhere enjoy the benefits of breast milk.
