This year, the World Kidney Day (WKD) is celebrated on the 13th of March 2025 with the theme: “Are Your Kidneys, OK? Detect early, Protect kidney health.” This raises a pertinent question and calls attention to personal responsibility for all to take actions to prevent kidney diseases or slow down its progression.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality as it affects 1 billion persons worldwide. With nearly 3.5 million deaths attributed to CKD-related deaths per year, it is estimated to be the 5th leading cause of death by 2040.
Therefore, the Paediatric Association of Nigeria urges healthcare professionals to continually raise awareness among adults and children on the risk factors that cause CKD and ways to promote kidney health.
We can start early to protect our children’s kidneys by encouraging healthy habits – drinking at least 3 litres daily, regular exercise, routine blood pressure and blood glucose checks, avoiding alcohol, smoking and recreational drugs and indiscriminate use of over-the-counter NSAIDS.
Remember; Healthy kidneys= Healthy you!
